FLAGSTAFF – Two male suspects, aged between 25 and 30 were arrested in separate incidents in Flagstaff on Monday following swift police action and valuable community cooperation.
In the first incident, Lusikisiki Public Order Policing were patrolling along the R61 near Nkonzo locality when they received information about a 25-year-old male allegedly in possession of an unlicensed firearm. The suspect was tactically approached, and police recovered a 9mm pistol with ammunition. The firearm’s serial number was found to be intact.
In a separate incident later that day, at about 16:00, Flagstaff Crime Prevention members acted on information about a 30-year-old man from Mfundisweni locality, who was seen driving in town while allegedly armed. Police intercepted the suspect and recovered a 9mm pistol with an erased serial number, along with ammunition.
Both suspects failed to produce firearm licences and were arrested on the spot. They are expected to appear before the Flagstaff Magistrate’s Court soon.
The OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, praised the public for their cooperation, stressing the importance of community-police partnerships in rooting out illegal firearms. “These dangerous weapons are often used to terrorise the very communities we serve, and we commend residents who continue to provide crucial information,” he said.
