Earlier this morning, just before midday, Mi7 Emergency Medical Services was dispatched after reports of a medical emergency at Howick Road in Athlone.
Two Advanced Life Support Rapid Response vehicles were sent out, and they found that a pair of workers, subcontracted by the municipality, had suffered burn wounds ranging from minor to serious.
It is believed the pair were sent out to attend to an electrical fault at a local substation when an explosion occurred.
One man suffered extensive burn wounds, while the other had minor injuries. Both patients were transported to hospital, by Mi7 and another service provider, for further treatment.
Pietermaritzburg firefighters were present to extinguish the fire.
