The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) continues its firm commitment to removing illegal weapons from our streets. On Wednesday, 13 May 2026, officers from the Tactical
Response Unit (TRU) successfully arrested a male suspect in Freedom Park for possessing an unlicensed firearm and discharging a weapon publicly.
Acting on intelligence received from a reliable source, TRU officers were dispatched to Freedom Park to investigate reports of an individual with an illegal firearm.
Upon arrival at the location, officers observed a group of males gathered on the pavement. During surveillance, they saw a male fitting the description draw a firearm and begin firing shots into the air, posing an immediate threat to the community.
The TRU team executed a tactical approach, activating blue lights and identifying themselves as police officers. The suspect was quickly apprehended, and a subsequent search revealed a Black Glock with the serial number filed off, six 9mm live rounds of ammunition, and one spent cartridge.
When questioned, the suspect failed to produce a valid firearm licence.
The recovery of this firearm, especially one with a defaced serial number, marks a significant win for public safety. We commend the TRU for their vigilance and tactical precision in removing a reckless offender from our neighbourhoods.
The suspect remains in custody and is expected to appear in court in due course. The JMPD encourages the public to continue reporting suspicious activity and illegal firearms to help ensure a safer Johannesburg for all.
