Through vigilant policing, members of the Western Cape National Intervention Unit (NIU), recovered three fully automatic assault rifles and arrested two male suspects.
The members were deployed following unrest at Siqalo informal settlement on Thursday, 25 June 2026. While patrolling on Jakes Gerwel Drive, they spotted a suspicious red Fiat Uno and closely monitored its movements. At about 12:15, the vehicle stopped in front of a shopping complex and the members approached it. They noticed that the licence disc had expired in 2023 and proceeded to search the vehicle.
They found a big white bag in the boot containing three fully automatic assault rifles and arrested the two occupants on the spot for possession of prohibited firearms.
The two suspects, aged 32 and 45, will appear at the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 26 June 2026.
