
One person is in a critical condition and another two have sustained serious injuries after a collision involving two bakkies, left the intersection of Commercial, Road and Prince Alfred closed to traffic this afternoon in Pietermaritzburg.
ER24 and the local Fire Department from Pietermaritzburg arrived on the scene and found two bakkies had been involved in a collision and that the intersection was blocked because of the accident. The driver of the one bakkie was unhurt and was found walking around on scene.
second bakkie, emergency personnel found all three occupants entrapped inside the bakkie. The driver and middle passenger were in a serious condition, while the second passenger who had taken most of the impact was in a critical condition. While the Fire Department used the Jaws of Life and other hydraulic equipment to extricate the three occupants from the vehicle, ER24 paramedics were able to stabilise the patients further. The second passenger needed advanced life support intervention to be performed due to the critical injuries that he had sustained. He was intubated and placed on a ventilator. All three patients were rushed to Edendale Hospital were specialised trauma staff were waiting for the patients to take over the medical care.
It is unclear who was at fault but all local authorities were on the scene and would be investigating the incident further.
