Inkosi Mhlabunzima Maphumulo House*: We continue to assure the people of KwaZulu-Natal that our highly energized team from Road Traffic Inspectorate will have no mercy on reckless motorists and those using our road networks to conduct their criminal activities.
The No Nonsense RTI Provincial Inspectors Phiwokuhle Ndabezitha and Sandile Mhlanzi in Pietermaritzburg, working with the SAPS Mountain Rise Dog Unit, have arrested a Polo Driver and his friend.
The two suspects are now facing kidnapping and armed robbery charges.
While executing #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation along the N3 between Hilton and Dr Chota Motala Road, the RTI team responded swiftly to a request for assistance from a member of the public who spotted the three suspects.
Apparently, the suspected criminals robbed him of his firearm and money weeks ago.
The suspects were followed by the RTI team and cornered.
They were finally arrested in Cedara Bridge trying to run away.
Miraculously, another victim was found inside the car and rescued by the RTI team.
The suspected criminals were found in possession of a firearm with one round in the chamber. The serial number had been scratched. However, the SAPS has confirmed that their system picked up that the same firearm was used to commit another crime.
We will continue to work with SAPS and other law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of the people of KwaZulu-Natal on our road networks as we head towards the festive season and beyond.
