One person has tragically lost their life after a boat capsized off the coastline between Umhlanga and Blue Lagoon in Durban on Sunday afternoon.
KZN VIP Emergency Teams were placed on standby and responded after reports of the incident were received. It is believed that a freak wave caused the vessel to capsize while approximately six occupants were on board.
Despite the efforts of rescue personnel, one occupant was sadly declared deceased at the scene. The remaining occupants sustained injuries of varying severity and were treated before being transported to nearby medical facilities for further medical care.
Metro Search and Rescue, together with the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and other emergency service agencies, worked tirelessly to secure the scene, ensure that all occupants had been accounted for, and facilitate the safe recovery and treatment of those involved. At the time, the scene remained active as emergency personnel continued their operations.
KZN VIP extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time.
We also extend our sincere appreciation to Metro Search and Rescue, the NSRI, and all emergency service personnel for their swift response, professionalism, and teamwork throughout the incident.
The exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation by the relevant authorities.
