A 20-year-old Ethiopian national was held up and assaulted during a business robbery at a wholesaler on Wick Street in the Verulam CBD – KZN this afternoon (Thursday).
Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) arrived on the scene and established that three unknown male suspects entered the store posing as customers. One of the males approached the counter and enquired about the price of a broomstick, while the other two produced handguns and held him up.
The armed men then proceeded behind the counter and assaulted the victim on his head and face while demanding cash. The third suspect stood guard over the shop assistant. The suspects fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, cigarettes, and an iPhone. Witnesses reported that the three men ran to a grey hatchback vehicle, where a fourth suspect, believed to be the driver, was waiting. The group then sped off.
The cashier sustained injuries to his face and head and is being transported privately for medical attention.
