Efforts to remove firearms from Western Cape communities, resulted in the arrest of suspects for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition on Saturday morning in Delft.
Members of the Delft Crime Prevention Unit followed up on information about a firearm at a premises in Delft South. Upon arrival at the identified address the members saw a male jumping through the window. The members chased him on foot and apprehended him in Wilger Street. He was searched and found with a 9mm pistol and ten rounds of ammunition in his possession. The 30-year-old suspect was arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. A 23-year-old male was searched at the premises and he was found in possession of five rounds of ammunition. He faces a charge for the illegal possession of ammunition.
The suspects are due to appear in the Bellville Magistrates’ court on Monday.
In an unrelated intervention, members of the Grassy Park Crime Prevention Unit were busy with crime prevention duties in Lyrebird Street, New Horizon, Pelican Park when they noticed a male running into the yard of a premises. The members chased after the suspect and found him in possession of a black bag. They ensued with the search of the bag and the male and found a 9mm pistol with six rounds of ammunition in the bag. Cocaine and 100 mandrax tablets were also found in his possession. He was arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and the possession of drugs.
The suspect is due to appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ court on Monday.
