Earlier this afternoon, a PVES first responder and PVES practitioner attended the scene of a female patient experiencing active seizures in Rietfontein.
On arrival, it was determined that the elderly patient, with a known history of epilepsy, had been seizing for over an hour, consistent with status epilepticus, a serious medical emergency.
An IV line was established, and shortly thereafter Gauteng Emergency Medical Services (GPG) arrived on scene. Their Advanced Life Support practitioner administered benzodiazepines in order to control the seizures.
The patient was transported to hospital in a critical condition for further management and care.
