The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Intervention Unit and Community Liaison Unit (CLU) Officers, arrested a male suspect for illegal mining-related offences and bribery, in the Cloverdene area.
Following on information they received regarding a suspect allegedly in possession of illegal mining equipment and soil suspected to contain gold-bearing material.
Officers proceeded to a residence at the corner Redsea and Cloverdene Road. Upon arrival, they found an African male inside a room containing illegal mining equipment, stones suspected to be gold and bags of soil.
During the operation, the suspect attempted to negotiate with Officers to evade arrest and offered them a small carry bag containing cash to the value of R19 500. The attempted bribe was rejected and the cash was confiscated as evidence. All suspected illegal mining equipment, soil and other exhibits found on the premises were also confiscated and booked for further investigation.
The suspect was arrested and detained at Crystal Park Police Station on charges of illegal mining, contravention of the Immigration Act (Act 13 of 2002), bribery, and possession of suspected gold-bearing or precious material. He is expected to appear before the Benoni Magistrate’s Court soon.
