The Durban Metro Police Service Tracing Unit, working in close collaboration with Crime Intelligence, has arrested a suspect and recovered a stolen firearm during an intelligence-driven operation in the Mfume area.
Acting on information received regarding a suspect allegedly involved in carjackings and in possession of an unlicensed firearm, members conducted an operation at KwaThoyane near Egoli Primary School.
The suspect was successfully arrested after officers recovered a 9mm Browning pistol loaded with eight rounds of live ammunition. Further investigations confirmed that the firearm had been reported stolen during a housebreaking in 2020.
The suspect has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition, and further investigations are underway to link him to the housebreaking case and other serious crimes in the area.
The Durban Metro Police Service commends the excellent collaboration between the Tracing Unit and Crime Intelligence, whose intelligence-led policing continues to remove illegal firearms from our communities and bring offenders to justice.
