Earlier today Aerocare, based in Bloemfontein received an emergency call from Quali-Care after a farm worker was seriously injured on a farm near the Gariep Dam. The worker fell from a stack of hay and suffered a serious spinal injury, necessitating fast and effective emergency air vacuation.
The Aerocare emergency plane left Bloemfontein airport at 11h26 and landed at the landing strip at Gariep Dam at 12h20.The patient was stabilised and brought to Bloemfontein airport where the ER24 ambulance took the patient from arrival at 13h25 to the Bloemfontein Medi –Clinic.

Although we know that this flight is going to cost us money, we could not leave this man to be transported by road ambulance which would have surely left him paralyzed for life.
Unfortunately the Workmen’s Compensation Fund has a set fee structure that is outdated and very inaccurate, thus leaving service providers like us and Employers footing the bill for a service that they promise Employers and Employees paying their COIDA fees every month.
We are however going to start negotiations with the fund to adjust these prescribed fees to allow us to deliver the service delivered today without it costing ourselves money. After all, the above service is what every South African deserves when faced with the trauma of an injury on duty.
