KING WILLIAM’S TOWN – Today, 08 September 2020, MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Mrs. Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe accompanied by representatives from Intsika Yethu Local Municipality, the local Chief, Chris Hani District Commissioner, Major General Funeka Siganga and SAPS members visited the grief-stricken Njuze family.
The purpose of the visit was to offer condolences, cry with the family and take a stand as a community that an incident of this nature never happens again.
MEC Tikana-Gxothiwe acknowledges that the incident that has brought us here today has left everyone shocked and dismayed.
“Every day we hear of rape and femicide incidents which are becoming ‘normal’ but this incident is beyond shocking. It makes us question what we doing wrong as families”, she said.
“Why are we harboring crime and criminal activities as communities? Why are we not speaking about abuse perpetrated by our kids”? she added.
Several speakers including Men For Change Champion, Lt Col Kilimani and Chief Ngcongolo spoke harshly against abuse perpetrated by men. Their message was clear – ‘enough is enough, all men must take a stand against gender-based violence’.
Groceries which were a donation from Women’s Network, Men For Change and Junior Management Core were also handed over to the family to assist during the funeral preparations.
MEC Tikana-Gxothiwe also gave a cash donation to the family to say, let the candle be always lit in this family during this difficult and challenging time.
Family and community members who were also present during the visit appreciated the continued support to the family by SAPS members and the swift arrest of the suspect.
The young lad will be laid to rest this coming Saturday, 12 September 2020.
