EASTERN CAPE – During the period of the 25 November 2020 to 10 December 2020 several activities were held in the Joe Gqabi District to observe the world-wide 16 Days awareness campaign.
The objective of the different activities was to raise awareness of the negative impact that violence and abuse have on woman and children and to rid society of abuse permanently.
Sterkspruit SAPS and various Government Departments embarked on Gender-Based Violence campaigns in the form of a formal programme at Majuba and Jozana areas, as these areas were identified as the focus areas.
Captain Yawathe attached to Aliwal North Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses (FCS) Unit and Warrant Officer Bojabotseha also visited the Sterkspruit Community Radio Studio and joined Rev Mathose on her show. They shared roles and responsibilities of the SAPS in cases of domestic violence and what is important for victims to know when they open a case. Safety tips for the Safer Festive Season were also shared with the listeners.
Maclear Station Commander and his team including the Community Policing Forum (CPF) decided to target only the men and conducted their awareness at Vincent location. The important role of men in the house, family and community were once again emphasized as men are there to protect the women and children in the society.
Jamestown SAPS, CPF and different role-players held an awareness campaign at Masakhane area. After the awareness campaign problematic liquor outlets were visited as well as victims who were effected by domestic violence to show them support and to bring comfort to them in a difficult time.
At Burgersdorp, Corporate Communication and Liaison joined Visible Policing, JMC and Woman’s Network/Men For Change and handed out Pamphlets on domestic violence. The importance of the Disaster Management Act Lockdown level one Regulations were also emphasized.
Aliwal North conducted a roadblock that also included the Provincial and Municipal traffic departments, Disaster Management and Environmental Affairs.
Pamphlets were handed out to motorists and information on a Safer Festive Season and to Arrive Alive were shared.
