LIBODE – Intensified Safer Festive Season operations in the OR Tambo District have led to the arrest of a 34-year-old male suspect for possession of an unlicensed firearm, ammunition and drugs. The arrest was executed by the Mthatha based OR Tambo District Task Team during an intelligence-driven operation in Moyeni locality, Marubeni A/A, Libode, in the early hours of Wednesday morning, 05 November 2025 at about 03:00.
During the operation, police recovered an unlicensed AK-47 assault rifle with ammunition in the suspect’s possession. In addition, the suspect was found with dagga bompies, sachets of Tik, and an undisclosed amount of cash believed to be proceeds from drug dealing activities.
The suspect failed to produce a license for the firearm and ammunition. He was immediately apprehended and is expected to appear before the Libode Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 06 November 2025. He will face charges of unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, as well as possession and dealing in drugs.
OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, applauded the members for their vigilance and commitment.
“This arrest is a clear indication that we are tightening our grip on criminal activities in the district, especially as we intensify Safer Festive Season operations. We will continue to ensure that our communities are safer and that those who choose to engage in crime are brought to book,” said Major General Modishana.
