Swift action by members of Kwazakele SAPS led to the recovery of three firearms and ammunition in Zwide on Thursday, 23 April 2026.
At approximately 18:30, members attached to SAPS Kwazakele followed up on information regarding a cellphone that was robbed in Walmer on Tuesday, 21 April 2026. The complainant had reported that three armed suspects, each allegedly in possession of a firearm, were involved in the robbery.
Acting on a location pin linked to the stolen cellphone, police proceeded to a residence in Mawa Street, Zwide. Upon arrival, members conducted a search of the premises in the presence of a resident.
During the search, members discovered an empty bread crate concealed under a roof tile in a corner near an outside toilet. Upon further inspection, three 9mm pistols with magazines were found hidden inside the crate. All three firearms were fully loaded, with a total of 43 rounds of live ammunition. One of the firearms was identified as a Beretta, while the other two had their serial numbers removed, and their makes are yet to be determined.
An enquiry docket has been opened for further investigation, and efforts are underway to link the recovered firearms to other criminal activities, including the reported robbery.
The Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Brig Loyiso Ngalo, commended the members for their vigilance and commitment in removing illegal firearms from circulation, emphasising that such efforts contribute significantly to safer communities.
