Approximately 80 vehicles have been destroyed following a massive fire that broke out at a local scrapyard in the Newlands West area on Monday.
KZN VIP Emergency Medical Services, together with multiple security stakeholders and fire department members, rapidly responded to the scene after reports of a large structural and vehicle fire.
Upon arrival, emergency personnel found the blaze rapidly spreading from vehicle to vehicle, resulting in extensive damage throughout the scrapyard premises. Firefighters, together with additional emergency resources that were called in, worked tirelessly to contain and extinguish the fire while preventing further spread to surrounding properties.
KZN VIP medics treated multiple patients on scene for smoke inhalation and burn-related injuries before further medical care was arranged where required.
The exact circumstances leading up to the fire cannot be confirmed at this stage and remain subject to investigation. The roadway surrounding the area has been temporarily closed while emergency personnel continue firefighting and safety operations.
All emergency services remain in attendance.
