A targeted crime intelligence driven operation led by the SAPS Mounted Unit and Coffee Bay Vispol members resulted in the arrest of two male suspects found in possession of three unlicensed firearms in the dense coastal forests of Bonga locality, Coffee Bay, under the Mqanduli policing area.
The operation was conducted on Monday, 28 July 2025, at approximately 10:50, as part of ongoing efforts to combat violent crime and the proliferation of illegal firearms in the OR Tambo District.
Police on horseback patrolling the rugged terrain of the coastline apprehended a 23-year-old suspect, who was found with two unlicensed 9mm Norinco pistols. One of the pistols had its serial number erased and was not loaded, while the second pistol had an intact serial number and contained live rounds of ammunition.
Preliminary firearm circulation checks revealed that one of the Norinco pistols belonged to a 50-year-old man from Coffee Bay, who had never reported the firearm as stolen, raising concerns around compliance with firearm ownership regulations.
A second suspect, aged 26, was found in possession of a Glock 9mm pistol with an erased serial number and live rounds.
Both suspects were arrested on the scene and are expected to appear in the Mqanduli Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 29 July 2025, facing charges of unlawful possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Police have indicated that additional charges may follow, as the duo is allegedly linked to a recent robbery in the Ngqeleni area.
Commending the success of the operation, OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, praised the seamless collaboration between the different units. “Working together as a formidable team to achieve one common goal is the best practice. These arrests reflect the commitment of our members to rid our communities of dangerous weapons and criminal elements,” he said.
