MALETSWAI – The determination of the South African Police Service (SAPS) to clamp down on the proliferation of illegal firearms yielded positive results when a 40-year-old suspect was arrested in Maletswai for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
On Wednesday, 03 September 2025 at about 22:10, members of the Public Order Policing team were conducting stop-and-search operations in Somerset Street when they noticed a suspicious man standing next to a restaurant carrying a bag. Upon searching the suspect, police discovered a 9mm Star pistol on his waist, loaded with five rounds of ammunition.
Further inspection of his bag uncovered an R5 magazine with 17 rounds of ammunition as well as an additional eight pistol rounds concealed in an ammunition holder. The suspect was unable to produce a firearm licence and was immediately arrested.
He is expected to appear before the Maletswai Magistrate’s Court on 08 September 2025 on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Joe Gqabi District Commissioner, Major General Lindelwa Vellem, praised the members for their vigilance and swift action, highlighting the importance of firearm licensing in safeguarding communities.
“The removal of illegal firearms from our streets is critical in reducing violent crimes. SAPS maintains a zero-tolerance approach towards those who disregard firearm laws,” she said.
