ATNS is participating in the 2nd International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Space Weather User Workshop, hosted by the South African National Space Agency (SANSA) in Hermanus, South Africa, from 8 to 9 June 2026.
The event emphasises South Africa’s growing role in the global space weather community. It aims to enhance understanding of space weather’s effects on aviation safety, particularly disruptions to communications and navigation systems.
At the 14th Air Navigation Conference in September 2024, recommendations were made to integrate space transport operations into the airspace system. ICAO will collaborate with member states to develop best practices to ensure the safe navigation of aircraft around these operations.
As reliance on satellite technology grows across various industries, the effective implementation of the Space Weather Information Service (SWIS) has become increasingly important. Robust communication mechanisms, backed by established contingency procedures, will enhance our ability to mitigate the potential impacts of space weather. The ICAO Space Weather User Workshop series continues to promote collaboration between space weather service providers and the aviation community.
