A family returned to their Emona – KZN home today (Monday) to find their house ransacked and several valuable items, including a shotgun, ammunition, and groceries, stolen.
Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) arrived on the scene and established that the incident occurred while the 49-year-old homeowner and her children were away in KwaDukuza – KZN. They had left their 72-year-old mother at home. Upon their return at approximately 15:00, they discovered signs of the break-in.
Items reported missing include an approximately 30-year-old shotgun of an unknown make, three boxes of ammunition, and various groceries. The firearm, a family heirloom, belonged to the woman’s late father.
It is believed that the suspects gained access through the front door, which had been left unlocked. There were no signs of forced entry. The suspects reportedly located the key to the family safe inside a school desk in one of the children’s rooms. Using this key, they accessed the safe hidden in a wardrobe. The stolen ammunition had been stored separately in a cooler box within another wardrobe.
The elderly grandmother, who was in the house during the burglary, reported hearing noises but assumed they were made by her returning grandchildren.
