Members from SAPS Soshanguve K9 Unit followed up on information received from an informer on Thursday, 26 February 2026. The information led them to a plot in Bultfontein, where an illegal refinery was discovered and four undocumented persons were found busy refining sand that is believed to be producing gold.
Illegal gold refining is the unlawful processing of gold bearing material to extract and purify gold without the required permits, often using dangerous and environmentally harmful methods.
Police recovered four refinery machines, large black gas tank, medium grey gas tank, lightning torch, countless bags containing sand and motor for spinning refinery machines.
Charges against the four suspects include illegal possession of gold bearing material, illegal refinery of gold, possession of material used to refine gold and contravention of the Immigration Act.
District Commissioner Maj Genl Samuel Thine commended the members for their dedication, vigilance and excellent teamwork, which led to the successful arrest and seizure. He further encouraged members to continue executing their duties with the same level of commitment and professionalism.
The matter remains under investigation, and the suspects are expected to appear before the Magistrate court. Law enforcement authorities will continue to intensify operations aimed at combating illegal mining and related criminal activities in the area.
