In the late afternoon on the 11th March, a runaway field fire, crossed farm boarders and ran into Le Fut Farm next to the N1 Paarl tunnel area.
Upon arrival on the farm, conditions were bad, 45 degrees outside temperature, and extreme dangerous smoke and fire from plastic burning approached the main farm building, holding a dog kennel with many security dogs.
The DFW commander was alerted on site by a local security Dog Handler regarding the entrapped dogs, and extra resources from the DFW, but also from Drakenstein Fire Brigade were called to assist.
This fire scenario changed from field fire to a rescue mission.
With the extra resources attacking the fire from different angles, the flames and smoke were halted meters before the kennel.
The dogs escaped the inferno and poisonous smoke from the plastics burning by the mission, which was a close call.
Even a simple fire can turn deadly in minutes.
We thank our DFW fire responders and Drakenstein Fire department for the efforts and fast response.
