A major breakthrough in the fight against infrastructure related crime was made in Newlands West on Thursday afternoon, where members of KZN VIP successfully apprehended a suspect believed to be linked to a copper cable theft syndicate operating across multiple areas.
According to information gathered on scene, the suspect was allegedly targeting telecom poles and stealing copper cabling used for essential electricity and telecommunications infrastructure.
These criminal acts have reportedly resulted in repeated power outages, communication disruptions, and ongoing frustration for residents and businesses within affected communities.
Further investigations revealed that the suspect is allegedly part of a larger syndicate consisting of at least six individuals. It is believed that the stolen copper is supplied to a ringleader who then repurposes the material into traditional jewellery and other items allegedly sold along the beachfront.
During the arrest, officers recovered a fraudulent municipal-style meter device allegedly used by the suspect to disguise himself as a legitimate municipal or utility worker while operating in public spaces. This tactic allegedly enabled suspects to move around unnoticed while carrying out illegal activities.
Infrastructure theft remains a major concern within the Newlands West area, with residents continuously affected by service interruptions and damage to public property. In response, KZN VIP has intensified active and visible patrol operations throughout identified hotspot areas in an effort to combat criminal activity and protect critical infrastructure.
This arrest marks an important step toward dismantling criminal networks responsible for sabotaging essential services and disrupting communities.
KZN VIP commends the swift response and dedication of its officers and remains committed to ensuring safer neighbourhoods for all residents.
