On Tuesday 06 May 2025 between the hours of 10:00 and 15:00, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Intervention Unit Officers in conjunction with EMPD K9 Unit Officers, arrested eleven(11) undocumented foreign nationals males between the ages of twenty (20) and fifty(50) years old, for illegal mining and contravention of the Immigration Act in the Kingsway area.
Officers carried out a sting operation as part to help curb the high number of illegal mining activities in the City of Ekurhuleni. Officers tactically proceeded to an illegal mining site in the Kingsway area, upon arrival when suspects noticed Officers approaching, they all fled into the nearby bushes on foot.
Officers managed to corner and nabbed eleven (11) suspects with illegal mining equipment such as Phendukas, Gas Cylinder, a Gas bottle and steel posts used for illegal mining activities.
The group was arrested and taken Benoni Police Station, facing charges of illegal mining and contravention of the Immigration Act. They are expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court soon.
