GAUTENG – A suspected illegal miner was arrested in Magaliesburg, West Rand District, after he was found in possession of two AK-47 rifles and ammunition on Wednesday, 15 October 2025.
Police officers attached to West Rand District Rural Safety and and other law enforcement officers conducted a disruptive operation at Blaaubankspruit in Magaliesburg after receiving a complaint of illegal miners who are harassing the farming community.
As the team was approaching, the suspected illegal miners fled on foot. Police gave chase and apprehended a suspect who was found in possession of two AK-47 rifles and two magazines loaded with 48 rounds of ammunition.
The team also confiscated 15 tons of gold bearing material.
The suspect is expected to appear before the local Magistrate Court, facing a charge of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
