Members of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Organised Crime Unit, working with officers from Umlazi and Durban K9, as well as Tactical Response Team (TRT) officers, conducted an intelligence-led operation in Umzinto which resulted in the arrest of two brothers, aged 41 and 43, in Umzinto on Thursday, 05 February 2026.
Intelligence was gathered about the suspects, who were believed to be dealing in drugs and terrorising the Umzinto area. A search warrant was successfully obtained and, upon execution, the 41-year-old suspect was found in possession of a firearm which was concealed under the driver’s seat of his vehicle. A search inside his bedroom led to the recovery of 46 rounds of ammunition of different calibres of firearms, including those of an R5 rifle and a shotgun. Police also found another firearm and police-issued handcuffs.
The second suspect was found in possession of drugs, and a subsequent search in his bedroom also led to the recovery of more drugs, a firearm and ammunition. An undisclosed amount of money, believed to be proceeds of crime, was found on the premises.
The two brothers were arrested and will appear in the Umzinto Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 06 February 2026, on charges of failure to safeguard a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, possession of suspected stolen property, as well as possession of and dealing in drugs.
