FREE STATE- Members of the Welkom Anti-Gang Unit arrested a 41-year-old man from Slovo Park section, Phuthaditjhaba, for possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition following a community tip-off.
On Saturday, 3 January 2026, the Welkom Anti-Gang Unit was on duty performing border security operations in Ficksburg when they received information from concerned community members in Phuthaditjhaba about a man allegedly in possession of an illegal firearm.
The suspect was identified among a group of initiates who were passing out. Police officers spotted a man matching the description provided and followed him to a house in Slovo Park section, where he was approached and apprehended.
Upon searching the suspect, police found a 9mm pistol hidden in his groin area, along with 13 rounds of ammunition. The firearm and ammunition were seized as exhibits, and the suspect was arrested and detained
The suspect is expected to appear before the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 5 January 2026, facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
