In light of the recent increase in reported shoplifting incidents, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape urges shop owners and retail staff to remain vigilant and implement effective preventative measures.
The following safety guidelines are recommended to assist in deterring and identifying potential shoplifting activity:

10. Utilize inventory management tools to monitor stock levels regularly.
11. Display high-risk items within the direct line of sight of staff.
12. Engage customers promptly, as early interaction can deter criminal intent.
13. Identify store areas where theft most commonly occurs.
14. Where possible, implement electronic tagging for merchandise.
15. Ensure adequate staffing levels to enhance monitoring and customer engagement.
16. Employ in-store security personnel to serve as both a deterrent and a support mechanism.
17. Monitor fitting rooms closely to prevent concealment of merchandise.
