A small house fire occurred on Jacaranda Avenue, Verulam CBD – KZN today (Saturday) after two (2) minors were left alone at home while their mother went shopping for her birthday.
Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) arrived on scene and established that the boy aged 11 and a girl aged 4 were inside the residence at the time of the incident. Neighbours noticed smoke emitting from the house and immediately investigated. On discovering a fire inside a cupboard, they extinguished the flames by throwing water.
The 11-year-old boy informed Reaction Officers that he had been playing with hot glue and ignited it using a matchstick, which caused clothing inside the cupboard to catch alight. The fire resulted in minor damage to the cupboard and clothing only.
No injuries were sustained by either of the minors.
Attempts to contact the mother were unsuccessful.
