Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) has detected a worrying trend. A notable increase in accidents caused by intoxicated drivers has been observed.
According to Reaction Officers & Paramedics, seventy (70) percentage of all accident cases involved drunk drivers. While attending to injured drivers, Paramedics reported they spoke in a slurred speech and smelled strongly of liquor. Uninjured passengers & drivers in these cases were not capable of standing upright.
Reaction Officers have further reported that open bottles of cans of liquor were found inside and around accident scenes and some drivers & occupants of the vehicle continued to consume liquor immediately after the crash.
Truck drivers, light motor vehicle drivers, and bikers were amongst those found drunk on the scene. The times of these liquor-fuelled incidents are no longer limited to nights or weekends. It was further discovered that drunken drivers have notes of different denominations kept inside the vehicle and readily offer bribes to attending First Responders.
These statistics (January 01, 2026 – June 01, 2026) are released from the RUSA Headquarters and do not reflect those of other Law Enforcement Agencies
