Between 01 December 2025 and 11 January 2026, Mpumalanga Province recorded 733 road crashes which resulted in 172 fatalities.
Out of these crashes, 379 people sustained serious injuries whilst 842 were slightly injured.
These Festive Season Road Safety statistics were presented today (29 January 2026) by Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr. Jackie Macie at a briefing in Mbombela.
The briefing was also attended by City of Mbombela Speaker, Councillor Morris Mazibane , SAPS Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, Head of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Ms Gloria Mazibuko and stakeholders from BUSCOR, SANTACO and MYboet Transport.
Although the number of crashes deceased compared to the previous Festive Season period, the number of fatalities increased by 29.
Most of these crashes occurred on weekends at night and in the early hours of morning.
The N4, N12, R40, R573, R537 and R33 roads were the ones that recorded a high number of fatalities this period, with N4 leading.
MEC Macie says that although the province has recorded a decrease in crashes, it is however saddening that the number of fatalities is too high.
“These statistics are not just numbers, but they represent empty chairs at family tables, unfinished dreams, and communities left in mourning. Every life lost on our roads is one too many,” he said.
He added that the department will continue to intensify efforts in the fight against road crashes and fatalities. These efforts include among others, deployment of law enforcement officers on weekends and at night, intensify collaboration with SAPS and municipalities, strengthening of road safety education programmes and consequence management for reckless and criminal road behavior.
