Shortly after 12pm on Wednesday afternoon, IPSS Search & Rescue, and other role players were alerted by the ARCC of a Mayday call that had been received from a light aircraft near Nottingham Road. A short while later, 2 aircraft were confirmed to be overdue in Margate Airport.
Teams immediately started gathering information, which was initially very limited. With the use of online tracking platforms, IPSS Search & Rescue and ARCC members were able to narrow down the search area on one aircraft.
Teams from various organisations, including SAPS, SAPS Search & Rescue, Midlands EMS, Mountain Rescue South Africa, security companies as well as local farmers were mobilised to the area to begin the search.
After an intensive search on foot and by drone, the wreckage of the first aircraft was located. The pilot, and sole occupant, sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased on scene.
The second wreckage was located early Thursday morning, some distance from the first. The pilot, sadly, did not survive.
The cause of both accidents will be investigated further by CAA and SAPS.
Our condolences go out to the friends and family of both pilots.
The operation was effectively managed and coordinated by the ARCC, ensuring the recovery of both missing aircraft and bringing closure to families.
